BSO and BGO Crystals

smagentl.gif (1155 bytes)

Bismuth Silicon Oxide (Bi12SiO20 or BSO) and Bismuth Germanium Oxide (Bi12GeO20) single crystals are grown by Czochralski method. Using the state-of-the-art crystal growth technique, CASIX provides high quality BSO and BGO crystals with large size. We can routinely obtain the big crystal boule as large as 45x45x150mm3 in both (100) and (110) directions.

BSO and BGO crystals have been widely used in photorefractive, photoconductive, electro-optic and acousto-optic applications including two-wave mixing, four-wave mixing, phase conjugation, real-time holography, optical data storage, optical computing and electro-optic modulation etc. The relevant properties of BSO and BGO are listed in the following Table:

Crystal BSO BGO
Symmetry Cubic, 23 Cubic, 23
Transmission Range (nm) 450 - 7500 470 - 7500
Refractive Index (@ 633 nm) 2.54 2.55
Density (g/cm3) 9.20 9.22
Dielectric Constant 56 40
Electro-Optic Coefficient (r41, pm/V @ 633 nm) 5 3.4
Resistivity (W cm) 5 x 1011 8 x 1010

The standard finished size of BSO and BGO crystals is 5x5x5mm, 10x10x2 or 3 mm and 7x6x3 mm. Other size and orientation are available to customers' specifications.
